How Does The Jim Hensley
How Does the Jim Hensley Hitch Work
If you have ever hauled a trailer chances are you’ve felt that heart-pounding moment whenever the trailer starts swaying. That is why, when towing a trailer, a weight distribution hitch is a must. So, how exactly does a weight-distribution hitch work?
A weight distribution hitch is a system that provides a level, stable ride when towing a trailer at its maximum capacity. It ensures that the weight of your trailer doesn't somehow put a tremendous burden on your vehicle.
Today, a wide range of weight distribution hitches are available on the market. But the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch is by far the most advanced hitch available. If you're considering the ProPride 3P® hitch, this simple Lego demonstration will help you understand how it works.
The ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch features a 3P technology which stands for ‘Pivot Point Projection'. The 3P technology completely eliminates trailer sway caused by passing trucks, high winds, uneven road surfaces, poor trailer design or poor trailer loading, and even driver inputs into the tow vehicle.
We think of the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch as a conversion kit that converts a bumper towed travel trailer or toy hauler to tow with the same stability as a fifth wheel. As we already know, all travel trailers and tow trailers pivot at the hitch coupler.
How does the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch work?
This side-to-side movement on the ball enables us to control the trailer at low speeds or while turning corners. However, when a trailer is acted upon by an outside force, that side-to-side movement on the ball is where the trailer sway begins.
What the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley Hitch does differently from other conventional hitches is that we do not apply any counteracting forces with friction, we eliminate the rotation on the ball by locking the side-to-side movement and provide a very stable tow.
Any side forces on the trailer or any forces on the trailer that attempt to pivot the trailer at the coupler are projected forward.
As Sean Woodruff explains, the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch operates completely differently. Why? That is because the 3P hitch is attached to the coupler of the trailer. And by attaching the main unit to the coupler of the trailer, we lock out the side-to-side movement on the hitch ball.
By locking out the side-to-side movement and projecting the pivot point forward to the rear axle of your tow vehicle, the 3P effectively causes your towing rig to act as a fifth wheel when influenced by outside forces.
With 3P technology, the towing rig becomes very solid and stable.
Can you control trailer sway?
Yes, you can deal with trailer sway, but it's no fun, at all. Either you slow down and manage it, or it gets out of control too quickly, to the point where the tow vehicle is at such an angle that there is nothing you can do to correct it – resulting in dangerous situations on the road. But with the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch, trailer sway can never happen, as demonstrated in the video below.
If you notice the truck approaches and collides with the airstream. However, the trailer did not pivot on the ball and apply any leverage, which would have required a steering correction from the driver. As you can see, the trailer moved slightly but did not affect the tow vehicle. It remained stable, and the driver experienced no loss of control.
That is how the Jim Hensley hitch works. We use no frictional forces to counteract the rotation of the ball, resulting in a very stable tow.
In fact, more ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch customers who previously owned a friction-based solution have identified the differences in the weight distribution and trailer sway, and all wished they had begun with a product that eliminates the problem, such as the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley Hitch. Check the video below.
With the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch, weight distribution is adjusted by weight distribution jacks. The spring bars & jacks stay on the trailer the whole time. You can lower the weight of the distribution jacks without even removing them. And most importantly, with the ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley Hitch, sway is eliminated, whereas, with the Blue Ox, sway is managed by relying only on friction to reduce it. Its weight distribution is adjusted only via the mounted height of the ball. The spring bars need to be installed and removed every time (remember every time) you hook up & disconnect the trailer which is very time-consuming. And this happens with the Blue Ox and all other friction-based solutions weight distribution hitches.
Lab demonstration of how the Jim Hensley hitch eliminates sway.
Trailer sway can get out of hand fast and the best way to avoid it is not to manage it but eliminate it.
The ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch is costly, but when you’re dealing with safety, you can’t put a price on it. Yes, there are cheaper hitches in the market but what benefit can it give you in the long run?
Make your travelling safer and more enjoyable. The ProPride 3P® Jim Hensley hitch will do it for you.

PROPRIDE 3P® JIM HENSLEY HITCH COMPONENTS
The ProPride 3P® anti sway trailer hitch main unit consists of two 3/4" thick links that project the pivot point of the trailer forward to near the rear axle of your tow vehicle. By not allowing the trailer to pivot side-to-side on the ball trailer sway is eliminated.
The ProPride anti sway trailer hitch yoke keeps the main unit hitch ball from pivoting in the trailer coupler which would allow the trailer to sway.
WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION JACKS
Heavy-duty ProPride 3P® weight distribution jacks allow you to distribute your tongue weight with precision and ease.
ADJUSTABLE HITCH BARS
The adjustable hitch bar is a huge improvement over the old, non-adjustable offset sold with the first Jim Hensley hitch design. The bar allows for multiple offset positions to get your trailer towing level. The tilt feature in the bar provides better weight distribution and keeps the ProPride 3P® hitch head in a level position.
