ProPride 3P Trailer Sway Control Hitch

$3,645.00

The Responsible Towing Standard™

Why Sway Control Is No Longer Acceptable

Trailer sway is not a matter of preference.
It is a matter of physics.

For decades, the towing industry has treated sway as something to manage.
That assumption is the root problem.

Once you understand how sway actually occurs, the idea of “controlling” it becomes obsolete.

What Responsible Towing Means

Responsible towing does not rely on:

  • Hope

  • Reaction

  • Correction

  • Driver skill under pressure

Responsible towing:

  • Removes instability before it can exist

  • Uses geometry, not resistance

  • Accepts physics as law, not suggestion

Responsible towers do not gamble with their families, their equipment, or the people sharing the road.

The ProPride 3P® hitch is the most advanced trailer sway eliminating, Jim Hensley hitch design on the market. Its industry leading design and innovation is second to none. The quality of the workmanship and service behind the product draws rave reviews from customers across North America.

The standard ProPride 3P® hitch package includes a 2" hitch bar. If you wish to upsize to fit a larger receiver you click the button above for the size.

The main unit comes with a 2-5/16" hitch ball installed. A 2" ball is available for smaller trailers.

The total weight of the ProPride 3P® hitch is 195 lbs. This is approximately 75-100 lbs more than most conventional hitches.

The hitch bar assembly has 8.5" of travel in either the drop or rise.

The ProPride 3P® sits further back about 18" from the bumper, you may need to extend your safety chains, electrical cable, and breakaway cable, we sell that in a ProPride 3P® Complete Extension Kit.

*If you have an ATC, InTech, BRINKLEY or custom application, please note your order or contact us directly to discuss the special parts needed for those applications. In most cases, there is no additional charge.

Anti-Sway Trailer Hitch Specifications

  • Solid steel, durable design and construction

  • Patented yoke to eliminate trailer movement on the ball - even in panic stops

  • 3/4" thick Pivot Point Projection control links

  • 2000lbs rated weight distribution jacks

  • 1400lbs or 1000lbs weight distributing spring bars

To figure the model you will need you should estimate your loaded HITCH weight. Tongue weight is not hitch weight. Tongue weight is the force the trailer applies to the hitch ball. Hitch weight is the tongue weight plus the weight of your equipment. It does not hurt anything to pick the ProPride 3P® model that exceeds your estimated hitch weight as most dry tongue weights are heavier than listed by manufacturers and the higher ProPride 3P® model will give you more top end capacity in your weight distribution.

The number on each ProPride 3P® model indicates the weight distribution capacity of each model. For example, a 3P-1000 can adequately distribute UP TO 1000 pounds of loaded hitch weight.

Canadian and Alaskan orders will be more than flat rate shipping shown.  Flat rate shipping is to continental U.S. only.

3p Hitch Main Unite

ProPride 3P® Main Unit

The ProPride 3P® anti sway trailer hitch main unit consists of two 3/4" thick links that project the pivot point of the trailer forward to near the rear axle of your tow vehicle. By not allowing the trailer to pivot side-to-side on the ball trailer sway is eliminated.

ProPride 3P Yoke

ProPride 3P® Yoke

The ProPride anti sway trailer hitch yoke keeps the main unit hitch ball from pivoting in the trailer coupler which would allow the trailer to sway.

ProPride 3P Weight Distribution V2 Jacks

ProPride 3P® Weight Distribution Jacks

Heavy-duty ProPride 3P® weight distribution jacks allow you to distribute your tongue weight with precision and ease. Patented US 12,311,711 B2

ProPride Adjustable Hitch Bar

ProPride Adjustable Hitch Bar

The adjustable hitch bar is a huge improvement over the old, non-adjustable offset sold with the first Jim Hensley hitch design. The bar allows for multiple offset positions to get your trailer towing level. The tilt feature in the bar provides better weight distribution and keeps the ProPride 3P® hitch head in a level position.

Evolution of the Jim Hensley Hitch

Hensley Arrow
ProPride 3P

In 1972 Jim Hensley built a small, simple prototype of his converging link hitch design. About 1976, with plans to pursue his hitch idea, Jim ran a patent search and found there was nothing even close to his idea in the patent office.

Central Innovative (CII) was incorporated to manufacture and sell the Eliminator Towing System.

In 1993 Jim received an inquiry for information from Colin Connell. Jim licensed the patent to the Colin, and in the first part of 1994 Hensley Mfg. Inc., was formed in Davison, Michigan for the manufacturing and sales of the hitch, now renamed the “Hensley Arrow Hitch”.

CII continued to build hitches for Hensley Mfg. for a time until they got up to speed.

Jim continued to work on design improvements that never materialized with Hensley Mfg. For this and other reasons Sean Woodruff, the 10 year Vice President of Hensley Mfg., ended his relationship with the company and began working on ProPride, Inc.

In October of 2007, Jim Hensley and Sean Woodruff worked to build the most advanced Hensley hitch design to date… the ProPride 3P®.

THERE ARE A LOT OF DANGEROUS MISCONCEPTIONS GOING AROUND ABOUT TRAILER SWAY
Get the FACTS here...

MYTH: Just Distribute the Weight Correctly and There Will Be No Sway

This is a very common statement and it is factually incorrect. A trailer CAN and WILL sway given enough of a cross wind or other side to side pressure regardless of load balancing. The same is true even if a weight distribution hitch is implemented. The only system that eliminates sway on a bumper pulled trailer is a Jim Hensley hitch, namely the ProPride 3P®.

Rain Water, Dust, Any Bump in the Road Can Reduce Friction Temporarily and Cause Sway

Water is a lubricant, so is fine dust. As a result of normal use a friction based solution like the Equal-i-zer® or sway control through 'capture' like the Blue Ox SwayPro® can have inconsistent amounts of friction applied under varying conditions. The ProPride 3P® (Pivot Point Projection) projects the pivot point of your trailer just forward of the rear axle, this stops trailer sway under any conditions.

MYTH: Just Get a 5th Wheel, The ProPride 3P® is Expensive

While it is true that the 5th wheel stops trailer sway just as a ProPride 3P® does, the cost of the ProPride 3P® is far less. Spending $15-$20K more on a truck that can handle the 5th wheel, while losing the use of the truck bed and spending 50% more on the trailer itself is a lot more expensive than a Pivot Point Projection hitch like the ProPride 3P®. The ProPride 3P® solves the problem as a kit that converts your rig to pivot the same way that a 5th wheel does. The ProPride 3P® also distributes the weight better than a 5th wheel does. Other anti sway systems that rely on friction do not work

Most Buyers of the ProPride 3P® Hitch Used To Own a SwayPro®, Equal-i-zer® or Other Friction Based Solutions

Friction based solutions are cheaper because they are simple mechanisms with less steel and moving parts in their construction. There are no real savings in buying a $600+ hitch that does not solve the problem. Further more, the ProPride 3P® retains it's value in the second hand market, usually selling for over $2000 used. SHOULD I BUY A JIM HENSLEY HITCH OR CAN I JUST BUY A FRICTION BASED SWAY CONTROL HITCH?
Reasons You Should...

It Is EXHAUSTING To Drive a Large Trailer With Anything but a Jim Hensley Hitch

A friction based anti sway hitch will help some of the time, but you will still be a member of the white knuckle club.

If you miss driving down the road with one hand on the wheel buy a Jim Hensley hitch, the ProPride 3P® is the latest of 3 such hitches in existence. First came the Eliminator, then the Arrow® and finally the ProPride 3P®. The ProPride 3P® is the only one which incorporates all of Jim Hensley's innovations.

The ProPride 3P® Hitch Allows You To Utilize the Full Towing Capacity and Weight Capacity of Your Vehicle

The ProPride 3P® eliminates sway, you do not need an oversized vehicle. You can tow to the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle. An oversized vehicle is not the solution to sway in and of itself, we call this The Big Truck Myth.

A trailer can sway on the back of a very large truck just as it does on a smaller one because the pivot point is the same. You may feel the trailer sway less in a larger truck, but not feeling the sway can also lead to the destruction of your trailer.

An Airstream on the road

Travel Where You WANT To Go vs Where You CAN Go

Owners of the ProPride 3P® Hitch routinely report traveling distances of of over 600 miles in a day. Without having to fight sway, the world becomes more accessible to owners of the ProPride 3P®.

No Need To Reduce Speed With the ProPride 3P® or Other Jim Hensley Hitches

Part of the reason that the world becomes more accessible to owners of the ProPride 3P® is certainly because of speed. The elimination of sway allows for travel up to 80 mph (130 Km/h). Do not try that with a friction based anti-sway hitch or anywhere that it is not legal or safe

We have had several different types of campers and even a motor home. The current one is our favorite and is a 35' Cougar 321RES conventional camper trailer that we really like and pull with a 2012 F150 powered by a 3.5 EcoBoost engine.

The convenience of having a great floor plan all on one level as well as the lighter weight and being less expensive are reasons we prefer it over a 5th wheel camper. But a 5th wheel camper naturally has greater stability in windy conditions because of the weight distributed over the rear axle. And safety is a big deal.

When our son called while they were crossing Iowa during very windy conditions on their way to Colorado and their family was shaken by the amount of sway, I decided to do something about it. Family is precious and other drivers on the road have a reasonable expectation that we have control of our rigs.

Yes, I checked out less expensive sway solutions, but decided to purchase a ProPride 3P hitch because of the great experiences users were having. They weren't kidding.

Last June, we took our whole 'tribe' of children and their families to Turkey Run in Indiana where we had rented a large home and apartment for a couple of days. My wife and I took our camper for us to stay in.

On the way back home, one of our Daughter-In-Laws called and wondered how we got along through the high wind gusts somewhere between Danville and Champaign, Illinois. She said there was a sign on I74 warning about wind gusts, but I did not see it...probably because three of our young Grandchildren were in the pickup with me and we were probably yapping along.

Anyway, I remembered feeling a tug on the steering wheel and wondered what it was from. But our son driving a Minivan had exclaimed 'Whoaa!' when the wind gusts rocked the Minivan which prompted our Daughter-In-Law to call wondering how we got along pulling our long camper through it all.

Pulling our large camper is a dream now and can be easily done with only two fingers on the steering wheel. But it is better to have a little more hand to steering wheel contact because not even ProPride can protect against hazards on the road or 'hazards' driving down the road :-) But your ProPride hitch will keep your vehicle and camper stable as you swerve to miss them.

Compare your options for sway control and then choose a ProPride 3P hitch if you can afford to do so. We decided we couldn't afford not to. And now we 'have our cake and eat it too'. The advantages of a great conventional camper trailer with the stability of a 5th wheel because of the unique ability of the ProPride hitch to shift weight toward the rear axle like a 5th wheel.

I don't normally rate products, but I need to make an exception in this case.

I tow a 6200 lb travel trailer behind a Nissan Titan. When I bought the trailer used it came with weight distribution hitch and a cheap anti sway friction bar.

In 2014 we took a trip from the west coast to Yellowstone and I was so tense with all the crosswinds causing trailer sway. After driving 400 miles in a day I would be exhausted from anticipating trucks or SUVs passing and causing sway... On that trip I met a gentleman that was towing with a Hensley hitch. He said he would purchase the Propride hitch if he had to do it over. The reason he had bought is he had flipped his Nissan Titan and trailer on its side in a gusty crosswind the year before. He said he would never tow with a standard hitch again.

After returning home, I started researching what hitch I wanted. I called Propride and talked with Sean. He gave me information and did not pressure me at all.
I ordered the Propride 3P with 1400 lb bars. I installed it myself. Took about an afternoon.

I just got back from a 7,500 mile cross country round trip. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I could comfortably do 600 mile days. The sway was eliminated. No longer did my trailer try to push my truck side to side when a vehicle passed us.

This past trip I encountered crosswinds, tailwinds, headwinds, passing semis, hail, etc. At one point we had about 35 mile crosswinds from 3 oclock. The trailer stayed firmly behind the truck. As one reviewer stated "Its not like the hitch makes the vehicle feel like its on a rail". You do have to compensate for crosswinds and your whole trailer truck combo will be pushed with the wind. But the sway no longer occurs, and keeping the truck in the lane is very easy. At times I felt like I was just driving the truck. The only reminder that I was towing, is that it felt sluggish like I was dragging a parachute. :) Oh, and having to stop for fuel more often.

I am so glad I have invested in this hitch. It will graduate to each trailer/truck that I upgrade to in the future.

  • It makes a difference. Try it and you will not go back to a ball hitch

We have been towing for nearly 8 years two campers three vehicles. My wife suffers from PTSD from a car accident so using the ball hitch even with sway control did not help when big rigs flew past us at 70 mph on either side. Not wanting to give up the glamper I researched the H Arrow and the ProPride. I talked with both and decided to go with Sean and the ProPride. Last year we took a 1,500 mile trip to Forida and were passed on both sides by 18's going over 70 that normally would rock us and nothing. Not even a tug. Amazing, not once but multiple times in the early AM hours passing CT, PA, NC, SC, in the rain, on corners. It was almost like we didn't have a 30' rig behind us. She still has PTSD, and hates being passed on the inside but it happens when you need to move out due to on-ramps and toll booths. I never go over 65 mostly stick to 60 to 62 for the tire ratings so we get passed often. This hitch made going to WDW and home a real dream, easy to hook up and to stay in your lane even with rumble strips, road construction narrow lane changes with j-barriers, you name it we have driven through it on the east coast. I trust this hitch technology and the company behind it.
The only modification I made was where the bal towers mount I reinforced the back plate on my frame with a 6" by 6" by 1/2" alum. plate and painted it back to take up some of the gap so I could keep the towers straight. The standard fixed fitting on the Bal towers was to wide and it would sometimes lean out under the tongue pressure. The plates solved that problem.
I also purchased the cover it looks great, keeps junk out of the opening and helps avoid with leg injuries. Wish it was yellow or had a reflective strip but I added one to mine.

Started our RV experience with an inadequate tow vehicle and a sub-standard hitch. Had thought about the ProPride but got talked into an Equil-i-zer by my RV dealer. Finally got smart and bought a diesel truck and the ProPride 3P 1400.
This was the smartest investment I've ever made. This product is second to none. Packaged very well and obviously constructed with the highest quality materials. Installation went smoothly and the customer help has been top notch when needed.
Ride is now rock solid, feels like TV and TT are one. Night and day from previous hitch. Feel very confident and secure now with this setup. Money well spent for the safety of my family.
