The Responsible Towing Standard™
Why Sway Control Is No Longer Acceptable
Trailer sway is not a matter of preference.
It is a matter of physics.
For decades, the towing industry has treated sway as something to manage.
That assumption is the root problem.
Once you understand how sway actually occurs, the idea of “controlling” it becomes obsolete.
What Responsible Towing Means
Responsible towing does not rely on:
-
Hope
-
Reaction
-
Correction
-
Driver skill under pressure
Responsible towing:
-
Removes instability before it can exist
-
Uses geometry, not resistance
-
Accepts physics as law, not suggestion
Responsible towers do not gamble with their families, their equipment, or the people sharing the road.
The ProPride 3P® hitch is the most advanced trailer sway eliminating, Jim Hensley hitch design on the market. Its industry leading design and innovation is second to none. The quality of the workmanship and service behind the product draws rave reviews from customers across North America.
The standard ProPride 3P® hitch package includes a 2" hitch bar. If you wish to upsize to fit a larger receiver you click the button above for the size.
The main unit comes with a 2-5/16" hitch ball installed. A 2" ball is available for smaller trailers.
The total weight of the ProPride 3P® hitch is 195 lbs. This is approximately 75-100 lbs more than most conventional hitches.
The hitch bar assembly has 8.5" of travel in either the drop or rise.
The ProPride 3P® sits further back about 18" from the bumper, you may need to extend your safety chains, electrical cable, and breakaway cable, we sell that in a ProPride 3P® Complete Extension Kit.

To figure the model you will need you should estimate your loaded HITCH weight. Tongue weight is not hitch weight. Tongue weight is the force the trailer applies to the hitch ball. Hitch weight is the tongue weight plus the weight of your equipment. It does not hurt anything to pick the ProPride 3P® model that exceeds your estimated hitch weight as most dry tongue weights are heavier than listed by manufacturers and the higher ProPride 3P® model will give you more top end capacity in your weight distribution.
The number on each ProPride 3P® model indicates the weight distribution capacity of each model. For example, a 3P-1000 can adequately distribute UP TO 1000 pounds of loaded hitch weight.
Canadian and Alaskan orders will be more than flat rate shipping shown. Flat rate shipping is to continental U.S. only.
ProPride 3P® Main Unit
The ProPride 3P® anti sway trailer hitch main unit consists of two 3/4" thick links that project the pivot point of the trailer forward to near the rear axle of your tow vehicle. By not allowing the trailer to pivot side-to-side on the ball trailer sway is eliminated.
ProPride 3P® Yoke
The ProPride anti sway trailer hitch yoke keeps the main unit hitch ball from pivoting in the trailer coupler which would allow the trailer to sway.
ProPride 3P® Weight Distribution Jacks
Heavy-duty ProPride 3P® weight distribution jacks allow you to distribute your tongue weight with precision and ease. Patented US 12,311,711 B2
ProPride Adjustable Hitch Bar
The adjustable hitch bar is a huge improvement over the old, non-adjustable offset sold with the first Jim Hensley hitch design. The bar allows for multiple offset positions to get your trailer towing level. The tilt feature in the bar provides better weight distribution and keeps the ProPride 3P® hitch head in a level position.

Evolution of the Jim Hensley Hitch

In 1972 Jim Hensley built a small, simple prototype of his converging link hitch design. About 1976, with plans to pursue his hitch idea, Jim ran a patent search and found there was nothing even close to his idea in the patent office.
Central Innovative (CII) was incorporated to manufacture and sell the Eliminator Towing System.
In 1993 Jim received an inquiry for information from Colin Connell. Jim licensed the patent to the Colin, and in the first part of 1994 Hensley Mfg. Inc., was formed in Davison, Michigan for the manufacturing and sales of the hitch, now renamed the “Hensley Arrow Hitch”.
CII continued to build hitches for Hensley Mfg. for a time until they got up to speed.
Jim continued to work on design improvements that never materialized with Hensley Mfg. For this and other reasons Sean Woodruff, the 10 year Vice President of Hensley Mfg., ended his relationship with the company and began working on ProPride, Inc.
In October of 2007, Jim Hensley and Sean Woodruff worked to build the most advanced Hensley hitch design to date… the ProPride 3P®.
THERE ARE A LOT OF DANGEROUS MISCONCEPTIONS GOING AROUND ABOUT TRAILER SWAY
Get the FACTS here...
MYTH: Just Distribute the Weight Correctly and There Will Be No Sway
This is a very common statement and it is factually incorrect. A trailer CAN and WILL sway given enough of a cross wind or other side to side pressure regardless of load balancing. The same is true even if a weight distribution hitch is implemented. The only system that eliminates sway on a bumper pulled trailer is a Jim Hensley hitch, namely the ProPride 3P®.
Rain Water, Dust, Any Bump in the Road Can Reduce Friction Temporarily and Cause Sway
Water is a lubricant, so is fine dust. As a result of normal use a friction based solution like the Equal-i-zer® or sway control through 'capture' like the Blue Ox SwayPro® can have inconsistent amounts of friction applied under varying conditions. The ProPride 3P® (Pivot Point Projection) projects the pivot point of your trailer just forward of the rear axle, this stops trailer sway under any conditions.
MYTH: Just Get a 5th Wheel, The ProPride 3P® is Expensive
While it is true that the 5th wheel stops trailer sway just as a ProPride 3P® does, the cost of the ProPride 3P® is far less. Spending $15-$20K more on a truck that can handle the 5th wheel, while losing the use of the truck bed and spending 50% more on the trailer itself is a lot more expensive than a Pivot Point Projection hitch like the ProPride 3P®. The ProPride 3P® solves the problem as a kit that converts your rig to pivot the same way that a 5th wheel does. The ProPride 3P® also distributes the weight better than a 5th wheel does. Other anti sway systems that rely on friction do not work
Most Buyers of the ProPride 3P® Hitch Used To Own a SwayPro®, Equal-i-zer® or Other Friction Based Solutions
Friction based solutions are cheaper because they are simple mechanisms with less steel and moving parts in their construction. There are no real savings in buying a $600+ hitch that does not solve the problem. Further more, the ProPride 3P® retains it's value in the second hand market, usually selling for over $2000 used. Ask the ProPride FaceBook Group members.
SHOULD I BUY A JIM HENSLEY HITCH OR CAN I JUST BUY A FRICTION BASED SWAY CONTROL HITCH?
Reasons You Should...
It Is EXHAUSTING To Drive a Large Trailer With Anything but a Jim Hensley Hitch
A friction based anti sway hitch will help some of the time, but you will still be a member of the white knuckle club.
If you miss driving down the road with one hand on the wheel buy a Jim Hensley hitch, the ProPride 3P® is the latest of 3 such hitches in existence. First came the Eliminator, then the Arrow® and finally the ProPride 3P®. The ProPride 3P® is the only one which incorporates all of Jim Hensley's innovations.
The ProPride 3P® Hitch Allows You To Utilize the Full Towing Capacity and Weight Capacity of Your Vehicle
The ProPride 3P® eliminates sway, you do not need an oversized vehicle. You can tow to the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle. An oversized vehicle is not the solution to sway in and of itself, we call this The Big Truck Myth.
A trailer can sway on the back of a very large truck just as it does on a smaller one because the pivot point is the same. You may feel the trailer sway less in a larger truck, but not feeling the sway can also lead to the destruction of your trailer.
Travel Where You WANT To Go vs Where You CAN Go
Owners of the ProPride 3P® Hitch routinely report traveling distances of of over 600 miles in a day. Without having to fight sway, the world becomes more accessible to owners of the ProPride 3P®.
No Need To Reduce Speed With the ProPride 3P® or Other Jim Hensley Hitches
Part of the reason that the world becomes more accessible to owners of the ProPride 3P® is certainly because of speed. The elimination of sway allows for travel up to 80 mph (130 Km/h). Do not try that with a friction based anti-sway hitch or anywhere that it is not legal or safe

Sway Gone Forever
It has been almost two years since I purchased my Propride hitch. My tow vehicle was a 2013 F150 with an ecoboost engine. My trailer is a 31' Keystone Hideout. Admittedly, the tow vehicle was undersized for the application but that is what I had. Myself & three of my friends left Cleveland Ohio headed out for Michigan International Speedway for the Nascar race. The trailer was swaying so bad that we were lucky to make there and back at all. When a semi would pass me it was a real battle just to keep it under control. My friend in the back seat almost had a nervous breakdown. (I'm not exaggerating) The Reese hitch with the "anti sway friction" device was totally useless. I bought new "e" rated tires. New shocks, and numerous other money wasting products that did nothing to help to reduce the sway. Before I decided to sell the trailer, I came across a Propride article on the internet. I did a lot of research and and decided to give it a try.I installed the hitch myself in about five hours. Hooked up to the truck & went for a test drive. The result, sway was gone ! When semis pass me now its no problem. If you are on the fence because of the price, add up what you already have invested. I personally can't put a price on safety.

One and Only
After researching trailer hitches, I came upon this hitch. I live in Michigan so I was fortunate to be able to drive to ProPride and get a first hand look at the hitch and a explanation from Sean as to how the hitch worked and also some mounting questions answered. Needless to say I purchased the hitch on the spot. Since I didn't need the hitch until late August and informed Sean I would pick the hitch up in late August. My new Jayco Flight RLS27 arrived at the dealer and we went to pick up our trailer after securing the hitch from Sean.
We arrived at the dealer and participated in a walk around including the demonstration of how everything work.
Now the hard part was to begin. Since none of the technicians ever laid eyes on the hitch, I was totally on my own installing the hitch. The service department was concerned about the hitch since they usually installed those inferior hitches with sway control. They were concerned about the liability they have to approve of the hitch installation.
Installation was perform over a four hour time frame and I crank up the torsion bars to a 2" height. We said our farewells to the dealer and left. At first the front end of my 2003 Ford E150 equipped with 3/4 ton rear springs felt like it was floating down the highway. We stop about 15 miles down the road crank the torsion bar up to 2-1/2". The front end still felt light so we stop and crank to 3". We then drove 250 mile home. The front end was much more stable.
Lets talk sway. We had totaled our previous trailer when a truck passed us and the trailer started to sway. It seemed that no matter what I tried to do to correct the sway, it seem to get worse, I believe was save us was when the trailer swung out far enough that it hit the guard rail an that stop the sway. Thank God.
The wife said she would never tow a travel trailer again. We started to look at new fifth wheels and of coarse a new vehicle since you can't pull a fifth wheel using a Van.
Own the way home I get a real good feeling how the whole rig was impacted by trucks passing us on the interstate. When a truck would pass us I would feel a slight push away from the truck, then a slight pull towards the truck. This push/pull was nothing as compared to my last trailer. I barely had to make steering corrections.
Since we got home I have tried 3-1/4" rise on the torsion bars and a 3-1/2" rise. At 3-1/2" rise, the front of my van feels like it does when not pulling a trailer which I like. Also we went camping with our trailer so we had to pull to and from the campground. For 3-1/2 spacing on the torsion bars is it us. We still need to take out trailer on the freeway to see how the trailer and vehicle react to passing trucks at our 3-1/2" spacing on the torsion bars.
Needless to say my wife and I feel totally confident is pulling our trailer with the Pro Pride. OH, by the way we have about 500 miles using the Pro Pride Hitch and the trailer tracks perfectly behind the tow vehicle with no sway!!!!
Pro Pride Hitches are Awesome.

I'm a believer!
My family and I were on our first trip with a new 2016 Jayco Jayflight 28BHBE, pulled by our 2006 GMC Sierra 1500HD, using a Husky Centerline hitch, installed by our dealer. Our first trip out, 200 miles north, was nothing but white knuckled, feeling the entire rig seem "loose", especially whenever travelling above 60 mph or being passed by vehicles. At first I figured my weights were off, so I stopped at a CAT scale, measured everything and found I was well balanced and within all of our truck and trailer limits.
My first instinct was to look toward a new truck, but I knew we really didn't have the budget for that right now. At the campground, while talking with the campground host, and another camper who was a full time truck driver, I was introduced to the Hensley design. They told me to go online and do some research about the design, and how it could likely solve my issue. After a little research, I decided I was not driving home until I had one on my trailer. After researching both the Hensley hitch and the ProPride, I decided to go with the ProPride. I could not find one negative review online, and I wanted the adjustable stinger, to ensure I had everything in place to use the hitch. While a ProPride is more expensive than other WD hitches on the market, my wife and I decided the investment was worth it for the safety increase alone.
I contacted Sean and he agreed to get one off to me right away, shipping it to the campground office. I received it in two days, and had it installed in about 3 hours. Sean was great and answered many of my questions within minutes via text throughout the install.
After our initial hookup at the campsite, and a few adjustments made in a nearby parking lot, we headed home. All I can say is it was a totally different driving experience then I had on the way up. While I still knew I was towing a 8200lb trailer behind me, the sway was all but gone and my truck felt much more stable on the road. I also stopped at a scale on the way home and found the weight distribution setup of the ProPride did a much better job transferring weight the way a good WD hitch should. While the price will no doubt make it difficult for everyone to afford, if you can, it will be money well spent and make your towing experience much more comfortable and safe.
We're looking forward to many more years of camping as a family and my only regret is not purchasing it sooner! Thank you Sean for all of your help! -
Got what I paid for - ZERO TRAILER SWAY
Quite simply, the trailer will not wag on the back-end of your tow vehicle. If any cross-wind or passing vehicle moves you at all, the hitch keeps the two safely aligned without tail oscillation.
The hitch performed rock solid when semi trucks and RV's passed at high speed both from behind on freeways or head-on on two-lane highways.
