ProPride 3P Trailer Sway Control Hitch

$3,645.00

The Responsible Towing Standard™

Why Sway Control Is No Longer Acceptable

Trailer sway is not a matter of preference.
It is a matter of physics.

For decades, the towing industry has treated sway as something to manage.
That assumption is the root problem.

Once you understand how sway actually occurs, the idea of “controlling” it becomes obsolete.

What Responsible Towing Means

Responsible towing does not rely on:

  • Hope

  • Reaction

  • Correction

  • Driver skill under pressure

Responsible towing:

  • Removes instability before it can exist

  • Uses geometry, not resistance

  • Accepts physics as law, not suggestion

Responsible towers do not gamble with their families, their equipment, or the people sharing the road.

The ProPride 3P® hitch is the most advanced trailer sway eliminating, Jim Hensley hitch design on the market. Its industry leading design and innovation is second to none. The quality of the workmanship and service behind the product draws rave reviews from customers across North America.

The standard ProPride 3P® hitch package includes a 2" hitch bar. If you wish to upsize to fit a larger receiver you click the button above for the size.

The main unit comes with a 2-5/16" hitch ball installed. A 2" ball is available for smaller trailers.

The total weight of the ProPride 3P® hitch is 195 lbs. This is approximately 75-100 lbs more than most conventional hitches.

The hitch bar assembly has 8.5" of travel in either the drop or rise.

The ProPride 3P® sits further back about 18" from the bumper, you may need to extend your safety chains, electrical cable, and breakaway cable, we sell that in a ProPride 3P® Complete Extension Kit.

*If you have an ATC, InTech, BRINKLEY or custom application, please note your order or contact us directly to discuss the special parts needed for those applications. In most cases, there is no additional charge.

Anti-Sway Trailer Hitch Specifications

  • Solid steel, durable design and construction

  • Patented yoke to eliminate trailer movement on the ball - even in panic stops

  • 3/4" thick Pivot Point Projection control links

  • 2000lbs rated weight distribution jacks

  • 1400lbs or 1000lbs weight distributing spring bars

To figure the model you will need you should estimate your loaded HITCH weight. Tongue weight is not hitch weight. Tongue weight is the force the trailer applies to the hitch ball. Hitch weight is the tongue weight plus the weight of your equipment. It does not hurt anything to pick the ProPride 3P® model that exceeds your estimated hitch weight as most dry tongue weights are heavier than listed by manufacturers and the higher ProPride 3P® model will give you more top end capacity in your weight distribution.

The number on each ProPride 3P® model indicates the weight distribution capacity of each model. For example, a 3P-1000 can adequately distribute UP TO 1000 pounds of loaded hitch weight.

Canadian and Alaskan orders will be more than flat rate shipping shown.  Flat rate shipping is to continental U.S. only.

3p Hitch Main Unite

ProPride 3P® Main Unit

The ProPride 3P® anti sway trailer hitch main unit consists of two 3/4" thick links that project the pivot point of the trailer forward to near the rear axle of your tow vehicle. By not allowing the trailer to pivot side-to-side on the ball trailer sway is eliminated.

ProPride 3P Yoke

ProPride 3P® Yoke

The ProPride anti sway trailer hitch yoke keeps the main unit hitch ball from pivoting in the trailer coupler which would allow the trailer to sway.

ProPride 3P Weight Distribution V2 Jacks

ProPride 3P® Weight Distribution Jacks

Heavy-duty ProPride 3P® weight distribution jacks allow you to distribute your tongue weight with precision and ease. Patented US 12,311,711 B2

ProPride Adjustable Hitch Bar

ProPride Adjustable Hitch Bar

The adjustable hitch bar is a huge improvement over the old, non-adjustable offset sold with the first Jim Hensley hitch design. The bar allows for multiple offset positions to get your trailer towing level. The tilt feature in the bar provides better weight distribution and keeps the ProPride 3P® hitch head in a level position.

Evolution of the Jim Hensley Hitch

Hensley Arrow
ProPride 3P

In 1972 Jim Hensley built a small, simple prototype of his converging link hitch design. About 1976, with plans to pursue his hitch idea, Jim ran a patent search and found there was nothing even close to his idea in the patent office.

Central Innovative (CII) was incorporated to manufacture and sell the Eliminator Towing System.

In 1993 Jim received an inquiry for information from Colin Connell. Jim licensed the patent to the Colin, and in the first part of 1994 Hensley Mfg. Inc., was formed in Davison, Michigan for the manufacturing and sales of the hitch, now renamed the “Hensley Arrow Hitch”.

CII continued to build hitches for Hensley Mfg. for a time until they got up to speed.

Jim continued to work on design improvements that never materialized with Hensley Mfg. For this and other reasons Sean Woodruff, the 10 year Vice President of Hensley Mfg., ended his relationship with the company and began working on ProPride, Inc.

In October of 2007, Jim Hensley and Sean Woodruff worked to build the most advanced Hensley hitch design to date… the ProPride 3P®.

THERE ARE A LOT OF DANGEROUS MISCONCEPTIONS GOING AROUND ABOUT TRAILER SWAY
Get the FACTS here...

MYTH: Just Distribute the Weight Correctly and There Will Be No Sway

This is a very common statement and it is factually incorrect. A trailer CAN and WILL sway given enough of a cross wind or other side to side pressure regardless of load balancing. The same is true even if a weight distribution hitch is implemented. The only system that eliminates sway on a bumper pulled trailer is a Jim Hensley hitch, namely the ProPride 3P®.

Rain Water, Dust, Any Bump in the Road Can Reduce Friction Temporarily and Cause Sway

Water is a lubricant, so is fine dust. As a result of normal use a friction based solution like the Equal-i-zer® or sway control through 'capture' like the Blue Ox SwayPro® can have inconsistent amounts of friction applied under varying conditions. The ProPride 3P® (Pivot Point Projection) projects the pivot point of your trailer just forward of the rear axle, this stops trailer sway under any conditions.

MYTH: Just Get a 5th Wheel, The ProPride 3P® is Expensive

While it is true that the 5th wheel stops trailer sway just as a ProPride 3P® does, the cost of the ProPride 3P® is far less. Spending $15-$20K more on a truck that can handle the 5th wheel, while losing the use of the truck bed and spending 50% more on the trailer itself is a lot more expensive than a Pivot Point Projection hitch like the ProPride 3P®. The ProPride 3P® solves the problem as a kit that converts your rig to pivot the same way that a 5th wheel does. The ProPride 3P® also distributes the weight better than a 5th wheel does. Other anti sway systems that rely on friction do not work

Most Buyers of the ProPride 3P® Hitch Used To Own a SwayPro®, Equal-i-zer® or Other Friction Based Solutions

Friction based solutions are cheaper because they are simple mechanisms with less steel and moving parts in their construction. There are no real savings in buying a $600+ hitch that does not solve the problem. Further more, the ProPride 3P® retains it's value in the second hand market, usually selling for over $2000 used. SHOULD I BUY A JIM HENSLEY HITCH OR CAN I JUST BUY A FRICTION BASED SWAY CONTROL HITCH?
Reasons You Should...

It Is EXHAUSTING To Drive a Large Trailer With Anything but a Jim Hensley Hitch

A friction based anti sway hitch will help some of the time, but you will still be a member of the white knuckle club.

If you miss driving down the road with one hand on the wheel buy a Jim Hensley hitch, the ProPride 3P® is the latest of 3 such hitches in existence. First came the Eliminator, then the Arrow® and finally the ProPride 3P®. The ProPride 3P® is the only one which incorporates all of Jim Hensley's innovations.

The ProPride 3P® Hitch Allows You To Utilize the Full Towing Capacity and Weight Capacity of Your Vehicle

The ProPride 3P® eliminates sway, you do not need an oversized vehicle. You can tow to the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle. An oversized vehicle is not the solution to sway in and of itself, we call this The Big Truck Myth.

A trailer can sway on the back of a very large truck just as it does on a smaller one because the pivot point is the same. You may feel the trailer sway less in a larger truck, but not feeling the sway can also lead to the destruction of your trailer.

An Airstream on the road

Travel Where You WANT To Go vs Where You CAN Go

Owners of the ProPride 3P® Hitch routinely report traveling distances of of over 600 miles in a day. Without having to fight sway, the world becomes more accessible to owners of the ProPride 3P®.

No Need To Reduce Speed With the ProPride 3P® or Other Jim Hensley Hitches

Part of the reason that the world becomes more accessible to owners of the ProPride 3P® is certainly because of speed. The elimination of sway allows for travel up to 80 mph (130 Km/h). Do not try that with a friction based anti-sway hitch or anywhere that it is not legal or safe

I have been thinking about writing a review for a long time and finally getting to it since I am going to be ordering another ProPride P3 hitch for our new trailer – I originally intended to transfer the hitch to our new trailer but the buyer of our old trailer has decided he wants the hitch after towing with it. Years ago my wife and I were returning to Missouri from Colorado in March on I-70 with a strong, blistering cross wind from the north. We driving our car (not towing anything) and were catching up to a Suburban towing an Airstream. An 18 wheeler passed the Suburban/Airstream and they lost it – started swaying, first onto the right shoulder, then across both lanes to the inside shoulder then off the highway to the right jack knifing – the Suburban rolled but the Airstream stayed upright. It seemed to happen faster than you can read this. Everyone in the Suburban was ok; they all were belted in so only bruises and scrapes. But seeing firsthand the results of trailer sway made a lasting impression on my wife and me.

So three years ago when we purchased our first travel trailer I knew I wanted something to eliminate sway. After Internet searching, reading reviews, etc., I decided to purchase a ProPride P3. We have a 2010 F-150 XLT SuperCrew 5.4L with towing package and purchased a slightly used 2012 Jayco Jay Flight 28 BHS travel trailer (overall length is around 31 ft). Trailer is 5,400 lbs empty and has a gross of 7,500 lbs. We normally tow with minimal water & empty holding tanks so the trailer weights in at about 6,400 lbs with our usual load of “stuff”.

Since purchasing the trailer used in August 2014 we have put over 6,000 miles on it including one 4+ week trip out west to Yellowstone, Tetons, and Colorado, etc. We have never experienced any sway even with strong cross winds on I-80 and I-70 and passing big rigs – nothing, nada, no sway period. The truck and trailer act as one unit; if you do have a strong gust of wind or a passing rig, the truck and trailer move as one to the side just like the truck would without a trailer being towed behind it. This hitch just works as advertised.

I talked to Sean before buying the hitch with a couple of questions and followed his recommendations on what to order. I had the trailer at the local Jayco dealer when we first bought it and had one of their mechanics help me install it. If my memory is correct we installed it in a little less than 2 hours, first time working with a ProPride hitch for both of us. With two sets of hands, it was a straight forward task and we didn’t have any problems or questions, just had to read the instructions closely.

As I mentioned before, I had intended to transfer the hitch to our new trailer but our friend & neighbor who is purchasing our old trailer has decided he wants it. He and his family used the trailer twice for short weekend trips to a nearby campground to see how his wife & kids like it (they are upgrading from a popup trailer). At first he was unsure about hooking it up compared to the old popup with a regular ball hitch. This last weekend they were camping next to his parents (also in a travel trailer) and when getting ready to leave he hooked it up faster that his dad. That was his third time hitching up the ProPride and he was surprised he was quicker than his dad. So now I have to order another ProPride for the new trailer – go figure!

Have a 2016 F-150 Super Cab and a 6.5 foot bed. I tow a 30' Airstream Flying Cloud. Before the Pro Pride hitch it was a white knuckle experience, the sway, the hobby horsing and getting pushed around by the 18 wheelers was terrible. Now I just sit back and enjoy the ride. I never would have believed a hitch could make such a difference. The customer service given during the installation was fantastic as well. Thanks for a well designed product.

Very happy with the service and communication with ProPride. A month before a 1200 mile trip I had saved up enough to purchase a 3P hitch system. Sean assured me he would be able to get a hitch shipped to me with time to spare for setup and testing. He did and I was given his personal cell number if I had any issues with install or setup. As it was the included directions were all I needed. Installation is straight forward if you are at all mechanically inclined and have access to the tools needed. Took me maybe 3 hours on a very hot day with "Beverage" breaks.

Now onto the towing experience... Hooking up to the trailer was easy. Just set the coupler height to match the stinger height on the truck, square up truck and trailer and back in. (My rear view camera made it a one person task, hooked and ready to go in 5 min) I took the truck and trailer over to get weighed and at first really did not notice much difference. Slow right angle turns seemed a little different. I feel like I can turn a little later and a little sharper. I set the jacks at the scales to return the weight to my front axle that the trailer removed. Turned out to be a six inch rise on the jacks. The place where this system shines in the Freeway and higher speed two lanes. I have a 37 foot trailer with a rear kitchen that has always been "Tail Happy". I have had to use the trailer brakes occasionally in the past to get it back in line. So towing it WAS always a little nerve racking. Not any more. No push and pull wag from passing big rigs. We (Wife and I) felt comfortable enough to use the cruise control while towing for the first time. Never felt once in 1200 miles that the trailer was driving the truck. We even encountered a strong gusty cross wind for about 300 miles. The rig ran straight and true. Now I have read about some feeling the gust or push from passing rigs would move both truck and trailer together with this system, but perhaps since we had a combined weight of 16,200 pounds, I never really noticed more than a little "bump". (Maybe that's what they were referring to.) Our setup is a 37 foot Keystone Cougar travel trailer and a 2016 Nissan Titan XD 4x4 tow vehicle. Actual ready to camp scale weights: Trailer, 9,100 lbs. Truck, 7,100 lbs

So, my opinion, if you can save up the $$ and would like to relax some while towing, purchase this system.

Now...Anybody want to buy a gently used Blue Ox Sway Pro?

After I purchased my first travel trailer, I had instant buyer’s remorse as I drove it home from the dealership. Being a total newbie, I allowed the dealer to sell me a bigger trailer than I should have gotten (a 35’ Keystone Outback at 7200lbs) being towed by my old Lincoln Navigator. The dealer also sold me an overpriced standard weight distribution hitch that they installed and adjusted for me. Coming home from the dealership, driving down the expressway in fairly high winds, I couldn’t drive more than 50-55mph without feeling excessive sway that had me totally stressed and white knuckling the whole way home. I was almost sick to my stomach about my purchase, knowing I could never feel comfortable towing it to where we really wanted to take it. After voicing my concerns, a friend told us about the “Hensley Hitch,” and how it had dramatically changed their whole experience, so I looked it up. Honestly, at first look, the price tag kept me at bay for a while, however, after thinking about it for quite some time, and reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews on the ProPride 3P’s performance, I decided that this was probably the only realistic option I had for ever being able to enjoy towing with my setup over longer distances. Sean was top notch, and awesome to work with, as he provided a level of customer service you rarely see these days. After receiving the hitch and flipping through the installation instructions, it looked intimidating to put together, however by taking things one step at a time, it turned out to be much easier to install than I anticipated. Just 2 days after install, we took our first 500 mile (roundtrip) trip to northern Michigan. After a little bit of tweaking with the amount of pressure I was putting on the weight distributing spring bars, I got the ride setup awesome. Coming back home, we drove south in consistent and gusting crosswinds from the west, and I was able to comfortably drive the speed limit, passing other slower moving RV’s, and semi’s, and sometimes even forgetting I was even towing a trailer. The ProPride 3P is truly a remarkable piece of engineering! Not only did it destroy the sway, it also eliminated my anxiety about towing long distance.
