Choosing the Right Hitch Class for Your ProPride 3P Hitch
Posted by ProPride Hitch Team on 9th Jun 2025
When it comes to pulling a trailer, the hitch you use is essential for safety, handling, and performance. ProPride 3P Hitch is highly regarded for offering the best sway control and weight distribution but choosing the right Hitch Class is just as important in getting the results you expect from your setup.
This guide will detail all the different hitch classes so you’ll know what size of ProPride 3P Hitch you’ll need based on your towing vehicle and trailer.
Trailer Hitch Classes Explained
Class I – Light-Duty:
For use with compact cars on small applications (2,000 lb GTW). Not compatible with the ProPride 3P Hitch but good for reference if you are changing your tow vehicle.
Class II – Medium-Duty:Class I – Light-Duty:
Used with compact cars for very light loads (up to 2,000 lbs GTW). These aren’t compatible with the ProPride 3P Hitch but are good for reference if you're upgrading your tow vehicle.
Class II – Medium-Duty:
With a GTW of up to 3,500 lbs, this hitch fits sedans and crossovers. It’s fine for smaller trailers, but most ProPride customers exceed this range.
Class III – Versatile & Capable:
Supporting up to 8,000 lbs GTW and 800 lbs tongue weight, Class III hitches are common on SUVs and half-ton pickups. This is the entry-level hitch class where the ProPride 3P Hitch truly shines, offering unmatched sway control.
Class IV & V – Heavy-Duty:
For serious towing jobs, Class IV hitches can handle up to 18,000 lbs, and Class V up to 25,000 lbs GTW. These hitches are ideal for larger RVs, trailers, and heavy-duty trucks. ProPride 3P Hitches are available for both, ensuring confidence even with the heaviest loads.
At a GTW of 3,500 lbs., this hitch is compatible with sedans and crossovers. It is OK for travel trailers for smaller trailers, but the ProPride customer profile is, most folks are over this range.
How to Choose the Right Hitch
- Know Your Specs
Check the towing capacity of your vehicle and the weight of your trailer. Match the GTW and tongue weight to the correct hitch class, the strength of your set up is only as strong as your weakest link.
- Account for Additional Cargo
Always factor in additional weight such as water tanks, tools and gear. This can affect the class of hitch you require and make sure you do not exceed safe limitations.
